1、絕大多數(shù)推薦信實(shí)際上是學(xué)生自己撰寫(xiě)的,只要讓推薦人大筆一揮,簽上名字即可。
2、反正所有人的推薦信里都會(huì)夸夸其談,說(shuō)被推薦人是如何如何優(yōu)秀,我只要一樣照做就好了。
3、推薦信只是個(gè)形式,美國(guó)大學(xué)要不要錄取我,還是要看我的考試分?jǐn)?shù)說(shuō)了算。
殊不知這樣的心態(tài),耽誤了多少“潛力股”的大好前程。推薦信在整個(gè)申請(qǐng)過(guò)程中,起著至關(guān)重要的作用,它是申請(qǐng)者自我營(yíng)銷(xiāo)戰(zhàn)略里至關(guān)重要的部分,一篇過(guò)于平淡的推薦信,很可能成為你申請(qǐng)材料里的一處硬傷,讓你永無(wú)翻身之日。
本文,避免如中國(guó)政府外交辭令般“空洞”的言論,手把手教你如何準(zhǔn)備大學(xué)申請(qǐng)時(shí)的推薦信,仔細(xì)閱讀它,你也可以成為大學(xué)推薦信方面的專(zhuān)家。
一、什么是“好”的推薦信?
一封好的推薦信,能夠通過(guò)列舉真實(shí)的,具有啟發(fā)性的事例或者描述申請(qǐng)人在某方面具備的潛力和特長(zhǎng),與其余申請(qǐng)材料配合,進(jìn)而支撐整個(gè)申請(qǐng)定位。使申請(qǐng)人在眾多與自己條件相當(dāng),甚至比自己條件更優(yōu)秀的申請(qǐng)群體中脫穎而出。但要注意,單單靠一封好的推薦信,很難達(dá)到被美國(guó)優(yōu)秀大學(xué)錄取的目的,推薦信講究的是“與其余申請(qǐng)材料的呼應(yīng)和配合”。
舉例:申請(qǐng)者a和b具有同樣優(yōu)秀的成績(jī)和背景,但c大學(xué)面臨只能從a和b中錄取一名學(xué)生的窘境。a和b都將自己定位為“善于觀察,樂(lè)于助人并且具有領(lǐng)導(dǎo)才能的人”。并且都在申請(qǐng)短文中做出了體現(xiàn)。這時(shí)候,輪到推薦信出場(chǎng)了。
a的推薦信如下:“做為校長(zhǎng),我可以肯定的告訴您,a是我見(jiàn)過(guò)的最優(yōu)秀的學(xué)生之一,她不僅成績(jī)優(yōu)異,而且善于觀察,時(shí)常幫助需要她的同學(xué),她還是我見(jiàn)過(guò)的非常有潛力的學(xué)生領(lǐng)袖。”
b的推薦信如下:“通過(guò)他的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化成績(jī),我想各位已經(jīng)清楚的看到他在學(xué)習(xí)上多么優(yōu)秀,我在此不再累述。我想告訴錄取委員會(huì)一件b給我留下深刻印象的事情。20XX年,我們學(xué)校舉辦50周年校慶晚會(huì),做為最值得信任的學(xué)生干部,老師們都同意此次活動(dòng)交給b來(lái)組織,但是令我驚訝的是:b主動(dòng)跑來(lái)找我,告訴我這件事情應(yīng)該交給x同學(xué)。在我眼中,x向來(lái)是一個(gè)不善言辭的學(xué)生。但b說(shuō)服了我,告訴我說(shuō):“x同學(xué)其實(shí)非常有創(chuàng)意,但因?yàn)樗煨詢(xún)?nèi)斂,所以不敢表達(dá)自己,時(shí)常顯的不自信,這次活動(dòng),是重塑x同學(xué)自信的大好機(jī)會(huì)。”我聽(tīng)取了他的意見(jiàn),晚會(huì)舉辦的非常成功。我知道,在這個(gè)過(guò)程中,b投入了大量的精力,在幕后做了大量的工作,但他把榮譽(yù)都給了他的同學(xué)。這是一個(gè)多么善于觀察,樂(lè)于助人而且有領(lǐng)導(dǎo)才能的孩子啊!

二、大學(xué)錄取材料里為什么必須包含推薦信?招生官希望從推薦信里得到什么信息?
自己對(duì)于自己的評(píng)價(jià)難免不夠“客觀”,推薦信的作用,在于招生官希望能夠從第三方的角度,客觀的了解申請(qǐng)者的情況。通常來(lái)說(shuō),招生官希望從推薦信里了解到的信息包括但不限于:
1、你在申請(qǐng)材料里講述的是否都是事實(shí)
如果你的活動(dòng)列表里完全沒(méi)有任何參加公益活動(dòng)的內(nèi)容,你的推薦信里卻提到你是一個(gè)熱衷公益,十分有社會(huì)責(zé)任感的人,這就不免讓招生官產(chǎn)生疑惑;如果你從來(lái)沒(méi)有提到你在音樂(lè)方面有天賦,你的推薦信卻告訴招生官你的鋼琴比莫扎特彈的還好,這就是個(gè)笑話。
2、你的成就是否足以給別人留下深刻的印象
有些話自己說(shuō)合適,有些話則是別人說(shuō)合適。“謙遜”一直是中華民族的傳統(tǒng)美德,我想很少有學(xué)生會(huì)在申請(qǐng)文書(shū)里讓自己鋒芒畢露。推薦信則提供了塑造你形象的大好機(jī)會(huì)。別人對(duì)你的褒獎(jiǎng)往往更客觀,更可信。
3、為申請(qǐng)材料中的“疑點(diǎn)”提供解釋的機(jī)會(huì)
張同學(xué)在gre考試中取得了1500分的好成績(jī),可他在學(xué)校數(shù)學(xué)課的平均成績(jī)只有80分,這不免會(huì)讓招生官覺(jué)得張同學(xué)不過(guò)是在考試中運(yùn)氣好而已。可是如果他的數(shù)學(xué)老師在推薦信中告訴招生官,張同學(xué)選修的數(shù)學(xué)課都是大學(xué)里開(kāi)設(shè)的最難的課程,而他又是整個(gè)學(xué)校給分最嚴(yán)的老師,在他的課上,學(xué)生的平均分只有60。那么情況則完全不一樣了。
4、對(duì)申請(qǐng)文書(shū)的內(nèi)容做補(bǔ)充
這對(duì)于高中申請(qǐng)本科的同學(xué)尤其適用。推薦書(shū)中,有一個(gè)小文書(shū)是非常難于處理的,那就是“在你列出的活動(dòng)中,哪一項(xiàng)對(duì)你最有意義,為什么?”這篇文書(shū)僅限150字。你會(huì)不會(huì)因?yàn)槠粔蚨械娇鄲?會(huì)不會(huì)因?yàn)闆](méi)有寫(xiě)出你自己的全部想法而感到遺憾?這個(gè)時(shí)候,推薦信會(huì)是一個(gè)很好的補(bǔ)充。
5、為招生官客觀的評(píng)價(jià)你提供全面的背景信息
中國(guó)的國(guó)情是特殊的。你費(fèi)盡九牛二虎之力,考入了省重點(diǎn)高中,遺憾的是,你在這批學(xué)生中只能排名中等。這個(gè)時(shí)候,如果你不能在推薦里說(shuō)明你們的學(xué)校是如何優(yōu)秀,大概只有全省1%的尖子學(xué)生才能進(jìn)入此高中,因此你雖然排名中等,但是你依然是最有競(jìng)爭(zhēng)力的申請(qǐng)者,那么你就喪失了讓招生官客觀評(píng)價(jià)你的大好機(jī)會(huì)。

i am pleased to write this letter for my former student miss nan li, who graduated from this college with an l.b. degree in june 1978.miss li was admitted to the department of law of this college in 1974 through highly competitive entrance examination which is conducted annually and is open to the whole nation. even in such a selective group.
miss li made herself distinguished. as professor and dean of the college, i have access to her records of academic work and moral cond uct, in her fourth year study, i instructed her in anglo-american laws on trespass. so i have known her quite well. miss lis performance, like that in many other courses she taken, was excellent with a superior grade of 86 for the first semester, and 84 for the second semester. in our university and in other university here, 80 is considered "a" , the highest level.
as far as i know, miss li wishes to continue her study in law for an advanceddegree. i am sure she has had sufficient prerequisite knowledge for the subject and certainly has the ability to undertake the study. i recommend miss li without reservation and shall appreciate yourfavorable consideration of her application.

It was a rare privilege he earned with his nearly impeccable academic performance through the years of his elementary and secondary school.
He impressed me almost as he entered into my university, a major cradle of Chinas scientific and technological talents. At the time, members of the Gifted Class all had to spend half a month studying by themselves the principles of calculus and then take an exam so that we could evaluate their self-study capability.
Mr. Ren scored the highest grade in that exam. He also exhibited a keenly whetted mind during class discussions. To my regret at the time, his English was not as good as his mathematics or physics.
